The Greatham Foundation is proud to announce that Lynn Kearney, a long-standing advocate for people living with Young Onset Dementia, has been awarded the prestigious High Sheriff Award by Michael Poole, High Sheriff of County Durham.
The award recognises Lynn’s exceptional commitment and nearly a decade of dedicated service to the Young Onset Dementia Group in Hartlepool, a group she has helped lead and sustain with tireless passion and care. The Greatham Foundation was honoured to welcome the High Sheriff to meet group members and present Lynn with this well-deserved accolade.
Lynn, who cares for her husband John following his diagnosis of Young Onset Dementia, has been the driving force behind the group’s growth and success. Over the last eight years, she has selflessly supported many individuals living with Young Onset Dementia, helping to build a supportive community that combats isolation and empowers members with knowledge, connection, and confidence.
Young Onset Dementia affects individuals under the age of 65, often while they are still working, raising children, and leading busy lives. Lynn has worked tirelessly to ensure that the group is a safe, welcoming space for those navigating this life-altering diagnosis.
Her efforts include organising monthly calendars, coordinating events and day trips, managing finances, securing funding, and inviting healthcare professionals to offer tailored advice. Under her guidance, the group has also raised vital funds through sponsored walks, Christmas Fayres, and other community initiatives.
Hannah Robertson, Senior Dementia Advisor at The Greatham Foundation said “Lynn is the heart of Hartlepool Young Onset Dementia Group. She brings warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support to every meeting. Thanks to her leadership, the group is thriving and has become a model of community-led support for those living with Young Onset Dementia.”
This award not only recognises Lynn’s outstanding contribution but also highlights the importance of peer-led support for people living with dementia.
