Dalton Back Lane Wall, Greatham

The Greatham Foundation is pleased to announce the completion of works to replace the Dalton Back Lane wall in Greatham Village, following its partial collapse around 20 months ago.

The original structure, which had developed significant stability issues, was located adjacent to a public footpath and highway, making public safety the immediate priority. While the intention had been to dismantle and reuse as much of the original material as possible, it became evident during demolition that the bricks and stone were beyond salvage.

This was a technically complex scheme: the age and size of the wall, its lack of foundations, and its position within the Greatham Village Conservation Area all presented significant challenges.

Working in partnership with specialist consultants (with thanks to Beaumont Brown Architects and Billinghurst George & Partners), the Local Authority Highways team, and the Head of Conservation and Heritage Services, the Foundation was able to deliver a solution constructed to modern engineering standards, while remaining sensitive to the historic character of the village.

The replacement wall replicates key features of the original design, including the stone plinth, varied brick sizes, coursing and bonding patterns, and a traditional clay pantile coping.

This project required a considerable financial commitment from the charity and reflects our responsibility to protect the heritage and character of Greatham Village, which remains one of the region’s true hidden gems.
