750-Year-Old Hartlepool Charity Unveils New Name and Renewed Vision

One of Hartlepool’s longest-standing charities has officially launched its new name and brand identity, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in its 750-year history. Formerly known as The Hospital of God at Greatham, the organisation will now be known as The Greatham Foundation.

Founded in 1273 by Bishop Robert de Stichell, the charity has supported older people, those living with dementia and community causes across the region for centuries. The rebrand reflects the organisation’s aim to ensure its identity is clear, recognisable, and relevant to the communities it serves today, while staying true to its longstanding values.

The new name – unveiled at a special launch event on 17 March 2025 – brings greater clarity to the charity’s work and reaffirms its long-term commitment to those it supports. The event welcomed local partners, supporters, and special guests including Dr Kate Gillen, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of County Durham.

Speaking at the event, Lawrence McAnelly, Director of The Greatham Foundation, said:

This change is about more than a name. It’s about making sure people understand who we are, what we do, and how we can help. The Greatham Foundation reflects both our heritage and our future.

Developed in partnership with North East creative agency Vove, the new brand identity has been designed to honour the charity’s long history while making it easier to recognise and engage with. The updated logo takes inspiration from the charity’s original crest, and the refreshed green colour palette has been specifi cally chosen for its calming and inclusive qualities – particularly relevant for those living with dementia.

The charity delivers a wide range of services, including almshouses, private lettings, residential and day care provision for people with dementia, and dedicated support for carers. It also provides grant funding to charities and organisations throughout the region.
